Alabama is still called The Heart of Dixie. In 1861 Alabama joined the Southern Confederate states of America and fought what we called the Civil war against the Northern Union states, over the right to have slaves. It was a brutal war sometimes pitting father against son and brother against brother depending on what they believed on the issue of slavery. In 1868, Alabama was readmitted into the Union. One hundred and forty years later although most of our country has healed and moved on, the wounds are still felt in some.
For the last hundred and forty years, those who were Slaves, those who were Union and those who were Confederate have stood side by side, shoulder to shoulder and fought any country or anyone who would oppose the United States of America. Over the years we and the rest of the world are learning that Americans are Americans first and foremost. Being American bonds us beyond race, color or creed.
Today Alabama is an integral part of our military strength. At the Maxwell Air Force base, (which is the site of the Wright Brothers first flying school in 1910), they have the Air University which is a part of any pilots training. They also are headquarters for the Civil Air Patrol and home base for C-130H aircraft (served our air transport needs for 50 years).

At NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville Alabama, they are working on the cargo launch vehicles and robotics programs that will pave the way for our next Lunar and then Mars exploration projects. They currently manage the propulsion and science aboard the International Space Station and have been a part of the space program from the beginning.

The Saturn rockets that took the astronauts to the Moon were built in Alabama. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon.

On July 20th in 1903- Henry Ford shipped his first car,
1921-
Air mail service between New York and San Francisco and Alice Mary
Robertson became the first woman to preside over the US House of
Representatives, 1926- Methodist Church allows women to become priests,
1947- Carlos Santana was born, 1948- I came into the world, the doctor
took one look at me and slapped my mother. (*Rodney Dangerfield, bless
his heart, I respected him)
1960- first polaris missile launched from a submarine, 1969- "One step
for man, one giant leap for mankind", 1976- Viking 1 lands successfully
on Mars, all of these events and hundreds of musicians and actors where
born on July 20th, yes indeed July 20th is an interesting day.
Today Alabama's economy is based on mineral mining, manufacturing, education and new technologies. They build everything from cars to lunar modules and they know that there future rests in the hands of education.
The weather in Alabama? Two words come to mind, Hot and Wet. Hurricanes have a special attraction for the Alabama coast. With the highest elevation being 2,400 ft. snow is a rare.
You simply can not talk about Alabama without the topic of football coming up.

The Tide's football team, started in 1892, is one of the oldest in the country. The program has won 21 SEC titles and a total of 12 national championships: in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, and 1992. There are also five additional years in which the NCAA's official record book recognizes the Crimson Tide as national champion: 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975, and 1977.
