Alaska is the largest state in the United States in terms of land area at 570,380 square miles, over twice as large as Texas, the next largest state.
Alaska is all about superlatives -- biggest, tallest, most. Let's start with mountains. They're probably the first thing visitors notice about the 49th state, whether they arrive via car, plane or cruise ship.
On clear days, Mount McKinley and other mountains of the Alaska Range are visible from downtown Anchorage and several other spots around town. McKinley, at 20,320 feet, is the tallest mountain in North America.

Is it possible to say the word Alaska and not think of "Fishing"? Alaska has the best Ocean, River and Lake fishing on earth. The "World Record" Sockeye Salmon, Halibut, Dolly Varden, Rainbow Trout, Pacific Cod and Inconnu were all caught where? In Alaska of course.

Alaska also is home to other natural wonders. Consider:
• Alaska has more coastline than the rest of the states combined, with 30,000-plus miles.
• There are approximately 100,000 glaciers in Alaska. The Malaspina Glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is larger than Rhode Island.
• Alaska is home to 17 national park systems. More than 54 million acres.
• At 5.6 million acres, Chugach National Forest is the second largest in the nation and is roughly the size of Massachusetts and Rhode Island combined.

• The National Audubon Society says there are 462 naturally occurring bird species in Alaska.
The Iditarod is a 1,152- mile race across the spectacular but brutal Alaskan wilderness. Competitors endure 100 m.p.h. skin-ripping winds, blinding snow, and temperatures reaching 70 degrees below zero, not to mention conflicts with bears, wolves and moose. "I do not know the word "quit". Either I never did, or I have abolished it." Susan Butcher (1954-2006)
