Maine

Maine has a population of over 1,200,000 with it's largest city being Portland.

White sand ocean beaches cover much of the southern Maine coast and dot the rest of the 5,500 miles of Maine coastline.

Scarborough beach

However, saltwater beaches only present half of the beachgoing opportunities in Maine. With 6,000 lakes and ponds, fresh water beaches abound.

Long Lake

Maine’s municipalities and state parks boast a variety of beaches where families can refresh themselves in crystal clear lakes surrounded by lush green forests.

Bradbury Mountain State Park

Forests, mountains and lowlands are laced with a vast network of watersheds, offering paddlers a wide range of choices, from gentle current to raging whitewater.

Kennebec River

Canoe trippers can spend several days paddling and camping on the Allagash, Penobscot, St. John, Moose, St. Croix and Machias rivers without encountering towns and public roads.

Cobbosseecontee Lake

Our abundance of game coupled with unspoiled woods and waters make Maine a premier hunting destination. Big game opportunities abound. Maine’s deer herd numbers over 300,000 and the moose population is estimated at 35,000.

Baxter State Park

No other state in the lower 48 surpasses Maine’s bear population of 23,000. Fall brings hunting and brilliant fall -foliage while winter is as busy as summer here - choose snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding, dog-sledding, skating and ice-fishing.

Skiing

Maine has many recreational sports: fresh and salt-water fishing, kayaking and canoeing, Windjammer sailing, white-water rafting, swimming and sunbathing at lake or shore, excursions to see moose, lighthouses, whales and puffins, plus golf and camping.

Quoddy Head State Park

For those seeking less of an adrenaline rush, walking tours, snowshoeing and wildlife viewing are popular. Soar above the mountains in a hot air balloon or take a guided horseback riding tour of the Maine woods.

Visit historic sites, houses, gardens and museums.  Shopping at L.L. Bean, of course, plus hundreds of factory outlets in Freeport and Kittery, antique auctions and stores, art and craft shops and galleries. Festivals and fairs are celebrated the length and breadth of Maine. Lobsters, seafood, shore dinners and BBQs are offered everywhere, and ethnic restaurants cater to all tastes.

Geese- Canadian

Maine also has some of the best bird and game hunting in the country. From ducks, geese and pheasant to deer, boar and bear hunting in Maine is a tradition. Hundreds of thousands of hunters each year take to the wild seeking a trophy and filling their freezer with meat for the winter.

Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America.  Birds add a fascinating dimension to our surroundings with their color, liveliness, and music. Because they are wild creatures, they bring an element of nature into our lives.

Blue-Julian-Woodpecker-Pigeon

Every year millions of Americans come to Maine to watch and take pictures of the birds and wildlife in our wonderful state. Come and enjoy the great outdoors that Maine has to offer.
