"North Carolina- The Tar Heel State"

On the right side menu- USA Menu and Attractions.

North Carolina has a population of over 8,683,000 with it's largest city being Charlotte.

Tourism is also important, with visitors spending more than $1 billion annually. Sports include year-round golfing, skiing at mountain resorts, both fresh- and salt-water fishing, and hunting.

North Carolina’s coastline has long been known for its scenic beauty, rich history, watersports and relaxation, and the more remote Ocracoke Island has long been one of the most treasured jewels in the state’s 300-miles-plus necklace of barrier island beaches.

Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach has been named the number one beach on Dr. Beach’s annual America’s Best Beaches List for 2007. It's part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Area that visitors have enjoyed for generations as a respite from hectic, everyday life.

Hike a mile-high mountain. Hang glide off a four-story sand dune. Kayak a tranquil lake. Spend an afternoon fishing in the surf. Discover how North Carolina puts the “great” in the great outdoors.

North Carolina

High in the mountains of western North Carolina, just a few hundred yards west of N.C. Highway 184, the Linville River rises in Linville Gap in Avery County at an elevation of approximately 4,100 feet above sea level. This gap is set among some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. To the east, the rugged crags of Grandfather Mountain tower above the valley below, while to the west looms Sugar Mountain, one of the most famous winter sports complexes in the South.

Cape Fear River

Linville Gap is part of the Eastern Continental Divide, the boundary between the waters that flow either west to the Gulf of Mexico or east to the Atlantic Ocean. On the opposite side of the gap, less than a mile east of the source of the Linville River, the Watauga River begins its journey of more than a thousand miles to the Mississippi River.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Among the major attractions are the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge National Parkway, the Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout National Seashores, the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kitty Hawk, Guilford Courthouse and Moores Creek National Military Parks, Carl Sandburg's home near Hendersonville, and the Old Salem Restoration in Winston-Salem.

Fishing is great in North Carolina, with so many rivers, lakes and streams to chose from the choices are unlimited. Do you remember your first fishing or boating trip? Ask anyone to tell the story of who first took them boating or fishing - chances are good the story is deeply personal and meaningful.

Over a dozen studies have shown that being with family and friends, relaxing and being outdoors and close to nature are the primary reasons people spend time on the water, and you can't do any better than fishing in North Carolina.

North Carolina also has some of the best bird and game hunting in the country. From ducks, geese and pheasant to deer, boar and bear hunting in North Carolina is a tradition. Hundreds of thousands of hunters each year take to the wild seeking a trophy and filling their freezer with meat for the winter.

Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America. In a recent study by the U.S. Department of the Interior, appreciation of birds ranks second behind gardening as America favorite pastime. Birds add a fascinating dimension to our surroundings with their color, liveliness, and music. Because they are wild creatures, they bring an element of nature into our lives.

In North Carolina we have over 300 species of birds, perhaps this is why every year millions of Americans come to North Carolina to watch and take pictures of the birds and wildlife in our wonderful state. Come and enjoy the great outdoors that North Carolina has to offer.
