As I studied Pennsylvania to find out what attracts vistors to the State I was puzzled as no one thing seemed to stand out. In spite of Pennsylvania's rather large population they don't have very many large cities. There are very few military bases. No national parks, No national monuments, then these words by Abraham Lincoln hit me! " that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Hurrah for Pennsylvania, they never forgot those words.

Every where you go you see evidence of a government "of the people". Of the 116 state parks in Pennsylvania none of them charge to enjoy the park. They accomplish that by education, a major part of the park system is involved in educating the public from a young age to enjoy the park and take care of it because it belongs to them. The people of Pennsylvania figured out that if they spend more time and education on the kids while they are young, they will be spared a lot of the social problems later in life that end up costing so much more.

The "people of Pennsylvania" do not seem to have the urgency to pave over the entire state with freeways and government projects, quite the opposite, they seem to have gone to great lengths to preserve the land so the generations to come can enjoy the awesome beauty their forefathers found and pasted on to them.

So if you come to Pennyslvania to be intertained you will find the usual amusement parks and city life with a thousand museums and hundreds of historic sites but the true beauty I found is the outdoors and the "people".

With 54,000 miles of rivers and streams, 116 state parks, and 20 state forests, outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of places to explore in Pennsylvania. I am reminded of the Canon company motto which says: "and leave it like you found it".

Fishing is great in Pennsylvania, with so many rivers, lakes and streams to chose from the choices are unlimited. Do you remember your first fishing or boating trip? Ask anyone to tell the story of who first took them boating or fishing - chances are good the story is deeply personal and meaningful.
Over a dozen studies have shown that being with family and friends, relaxing and being outdoors and close to nature are the primary reasons people spend time on the water, and you can't do any better than fishing in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania also has some of the best bird and game hunting in the country. From ducks, geese and pheasant to deer, boar and bear hunting in Pennsylvania is a tradition. Hundreds of thousands of hunters each year take to the wild seeking a trophy and filling their freezer with meat for the winter.
Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor activity in America. In a recent study by the U.S. Department of the Interior, appreciation of birds ranks second behind gardening as America favorite pastime. Birds add a fascinating dimension to our surroundings with their color, liveliness, and music. Because they are wild creatures, they bring an element of nature into our lives.
In Pennsylvania we have over 300 species of birds, perhaps this is why every year millions of Americans come to Pennsylvania to watch and take pictures of the birds and wildlife in our wonderful state. Come and enjoy the great outdoors that Pennsylvania has to offer.
